Dr Dmitry Voitka from Belarusian Institute of Plant Protection has completed a three-month fellowship at the Department of Phytopathology of the Forest Research Institute based at Sękocin near Warsaw. During the period of the fellowship Dr Voitka played an active part in the work of the Department, in particular as regards the devising of a strategy for the protection of the horse chestnut against both the horse chestnut leaf miner Cameraria ohridella and the fungus capable of inducing the so-called brown leaf mould (i.e. Guignardia aesculi). However, the work to which the greatest amount of his time was devoted – pursued in cooperation with the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Skierniewice and the Toruń-based Central Laboratory of the Plant Protection and Seed Service – was concerned with root phytophthoroses of a range of species of tree and shrub, plus ornamental plants.

The materials collected in the course of the internship were subject to statistical processing and used in the compiling of scientific reports and publications. Given over for publication were such articles from Dr Voitka as ”Cameraria ohridella – a threat to horse chestnuts in Belarus?” in Rolnictwo i Ochrona Roślin and “Will Poland’s alders die off?” in Las Polski.

In addition, a joint presentation was prepared for delivery at the International IUFRO Conference devoted to Root and Butt Rots (16.08-22.08.04 in Poznań/Białowieża), at the Conference on “Improvement and unification of plant disease diagnostics” (30.08-1.09.04 in Skierniewice) as well as at the international conference on phytophthoroses in nurseries and stands (24-26 October 2004 at Jedlnia)
