On 9-22.10.2005 Dr Marcin Jachym visited the Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape (BFW) in Vien, Austria. The main goals of the visit were: training in range of learning of software (ArcGIS 9.1) bought for project PROFOREST CE, building a common Central-European database of forest insect pest, building a CE map on the occurrence of major forest insects.

The following detailed work program has been developed and realized:
- Training with new GIS software (ArcGIS 9.1 and extensions):
  • planning project,
  • organizing the project database,
  • defining the coordinate system for the elevation data,
  • digitizing with use new software,
  • using ModelBuilder for geoprocessing methods
- Building a CE map on the occurrence of major forest insects:
  • Joining the Austrian map with data of sanitary cuttings of infested trees by bark beetles
For the training the own digital map and data were used and data from BFW. The knowledge from the visit is currently used for further development of the database and map being one of the subjects of this WP, which will enable the achievement of the defined deliverable.
The Central European database and digital map concerning the threats caused by selected insect pests in forests was also developed. The data and maps from eight countries (Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Hungary and Austria) were gathered and joined.
